Primers

Are you going to start a painting job soon? Then chances are that you will need to treat the wall, stairs or other substrates with a primer first. A primer is actually indispensable in paint jobs. You apply it to the substrate you are going to paint to create a bonding layer between the substrate and the finish coat. This is important for the end result.

The paint adheres better to the substrate after applying primers. The substrate also sucks less, so you don't have to apply as many coats of the paint. And since a primer costs less than paint, by applying a good primer first, you end up cheaper.

What is a primer?

Primers are the first layer you apply to the surface you are going to paint. The composition is usually not much different from regular paint. The application, however, is different. Regular paint is what you use to finish the surface. A primer is for the step before that. You use it to pre-treat walls, furniture and more. Then the paint or stucco you bought will adhere better, making the end result look nicer. In addition, primers protect the surface and help with insulation.

Why use primers first?

There are several reasons to use a primer before painting. On a new wall that you just had plastered, you use a primer to block the porosity of the wall. A new wall still sucks a lot, but not everywhere equally. If you don't use primer on such a wall, the wall will not absorb the paint evenly. You will see this reflected in the end result of your paint job. In addition, you then have to apply several layers of paint. And because you often pay more for paint than for primer, it is better to apply a layer of primer first.

Primers can also be used to neutralize an old color on a substrate. Especially if you want to apply a light color over a dark color, this is necessary. Otherwise, you will again have to apply many coats of paint before you get the result you are looking for.

There are many different types of primers available, because not every surface can be treated with the same primer. This is something to pay close attention to when buying a primer.
